BIO

Joseph Stabilito has been creating dynamic canvases since his inaugural exhibition in 1982 at the Sande Webster Gallery in Philadelphia. Born in 1955, Stabilito attended the Tyler College of Art in Elkins Park, Pa. His early work followed the canon of the Abstract Illusionism movement, populated by James Havard and others. A showcase of his larger paintings in the windows of Bonwit Teller, an elegant women’s store, brought his first public recognition. That was followed by a display of his boldly colored canvases for the windows of Bloomingdales in New York, which earned him the attention of prominent interior designers, such as Juan Montoya and Joe deSantis, who commissioned his work. In 1983 he moved to New York, and joined the burgeoning East Village art scene, a red hot cultural moment. Stabilito then began changing his work, searching for a truer expression of himself. He experimented with various styles, and techniques, realizing that his love of abstraction, color, and surrealism were the dominant components of an idiosyncratic style he could call his own. To that end, Stabilito has been painting for over 40 years, and been exhibited in shows, galleries, and artfairs around the globe. His blend of florescent color, inventive structuring, and doodles are instantly unique. Joseph Stabilito currently lives in New York and Upstate NY.

Joseph Stabilito’s canvases brim with color and energy. Densely layered with poured acrylic paint, swirling gestures, and intricate ink drawings that dance together to create dreamy, poetic compositions. In these paintings, biometric forms coexist with cybergrids, anatomy, and other hidden marks. They are simultaneously macro and micro. Each work opens a unique realm of interpretations, inviting the viewer to delve into the recesses of the artist’s universe. These are paintings you will get lost in.

Artist Statement

My newest paintings surge and pop with electricity. I begin by pouring paint onto my canvas. I’m influenced by everything I’m seeing in my world. Pattern, composition, and line are always considered. There’s a primal beauty I’m out to capture. Color is a trusted tool in my arsenal, and I’m not afraid to be seduced by it. I approach each piece intuitively, allowing myself to be pulled into its orbit. I give myself permission to experiment and push into uncharted territory. It’s the process of making that draws me into the work. Contextually, I’m playing with surrealism, but narratively I’m pulling rom anatomy, pop art, graffiti, and more. Swirls inhabit shapes that coalesce around networks, Doodles and drawings overlap the dimensional space. But in the end, what I’m offering the viewer is an invitation into my world. And I’m hoping that they will find a beauty and mystery in it.
